In Search of History – Scourge of the Black Death (History Channel)

Some people believe it was sent by God to punish the sins of the world. First recognized in 542 AD, the plague swept from Egypt through Asia Minor and Europe on a path of destruction, killing more than 100 million in countless outbreaks and plunging the world into the Dark Ages. Today, much is known about this ancient scourge, and modern medicine is largely able to contain it. I’m Dutch, as is Carice van Houten, who plays the necromancer. Carice speaks her English lines with a Dutch accent, which I find extremely annoying. What I was wondering: does this also bother native English speakers? Especially as her character is supposed to be British. Or is it just nagging me, because I’m Dutch myself?

I just watched this film… It makes you think, does it? Religion in nowdays are the same but in a smaller form. Even if your life is going well, you got friends, job, a beautiful wife and so on, even then christians says that i must redeem myself from a sin!

I mean, what the heck? What sin? Sin that some dude did thousands of years ago by eating apple? I hate when christians tells that i need redemption and i am sinfull person. I have done nothing wrong, i try to be friendly to all!

What is most worse part of this? It is that christians tries to take everything, even the peace after death! Think about it. They got balls to tell that after death non-christians will go to hell! Even in death you are not safe!

This movie sums christianity up. This movie was about village that didnt believe in god/heaven/hell but science and lived in harmony. They didnt have disease cause there was no people to bring it there. Still when christians showed up their only intention was about to kill everyone, even when their life was perfect!

World would be so much better place to live without these wackous running around telling that we need redeem ourselfs.

    just my though

I loved this film. The realistic atmosphere it created submerged me into the grim griminess of the 14th Century. The ugly nastiness of it all is very reminiscent of The Name of the Rose and the story is just as successful. But the spell was broken two-thirds of the way through when the Necromancer came on screen. Close-ups of her face clearly show modern make-up with lip-stick, foundation and quite complex eye shadow design. Don’t get me wrong, she looks great, but the contrast of this modern face against the medieval grime of everyone else screamed at me whenever she was on screen and it broke the spell.

Thinking about it, perhaps the filmmakers wanted to separate her from the rest of the cast to emphasise her ‘magical’ powers. This would make sense. But to me, as I say, it broke the spell of the film and I was distracted from it by looking at her make-up.

Interestingly, other modern intrusions into the film – fast cuts, references to other films (e.g. The Name of the Rose, Aguirre, The Deer Hunter, Excalibur, The Wicker Man, Lord of the Rings, Romeo and Juliet) – didn’t bother me in the least and for once I thought these added to the film.

    But that make-up…
