With a rigorous eye, Blindsight’s Lucy Walker examines the arms race from the inception of the atomic bomb to the present. She builds her three-part structure around a speech from President Kennedy, in which he warns of “accident, miscalculation, and madness” in regard to nuclear power. If Kennedy serves as the film’s conscience, physicist Robert Oppenheimer serves as its heart–the man who oversaw the Manhattan Project only to regret the death and destruction it would engender (footage of the p

You want zero nukes huh? Nuclear weapons are the reason that NATO and the USSR/Communist bloc didn’t start World War 3 and why the USSR didn’t go to war with China in the 1970s. Without the threat of annihilation our society would just go back to the early twentieth century when nations were constantly building their militaries bigger and bigger to outclass each other. Arms races eventually lead to war. Really, we should be thanking the bomb for giving us 65 years without a major war. Limiting the number of nukes and nuclear armed countries is good but calling for zero nukes is just hippie drivel. It would be so great if we all could get rid of weapons, smoke weed and talk about love all day long. But in the real world people are inherently stupid and violent and we need overwhelming, doomsday weapons to scare people into being civil towards one another.

So lets give a peace prize to the nuclear missile! Afterall, the threat of nuclear apocolypse has stopped more wars from starting than the UN and the League of Nations combined.

Although a documentary like this makes a good point, that there is NO good in nuclear weapons, it is too late to dream of a world without them. For America to rid themselves of nuclear weapons would leave them defenseless to the world and to expect the world to go along with getting rid of nuclear weapons EVER is naiv’e.

a country whom has the power of the atomic bomb will never give it up at this point as it would be like putting down your hand at a card game in a casino and expecting everyone to do the same. the world is too full of evil people with evil intentions to really entertain the thought that all the worlds nuclear bombs can just be thrown away and the world move on to a better peaceful condition. really, more simply, as sad as it is- it is impossible to maintain peace in the world as long as man walks it- man is selfish and will never stop throwing rocks at their neighbors.
