This is not a "sugary" romantic comedy. Not by any means.
Here’s a quick overview.
Boy’s a self-admitted ahole. Miserable.
Girl’s "nerdy-hot." Miserable.
Both live in L.A., but she’s made plans to move back to Chicago to live with her sister.
Boy meets girl at a bar. On Christmas. He had just broken up with his girlfriend earlier that day in an aholish way. It’s the very first scene, and so a-holish, I doubt the executives will allow it. They’ll probably just leave it out.
By the way, I read the first draft, and the writer says the script has gone through changes "75%" of it is "still there" and said changes have made it "demonstrably stronger."
Anyway, back to the story:
Boy and girl decide to stay together until she moves to Chicago, which Boy thinks is great because he’s dumped five girls in the last year. Oh, but this one’s different, and they decide to maintain a long distance relationship, hence the title.
This is very funny, and the dialog is quite awesome.
Is it at all insightful about men, women, relationships? Does it have anything meaningful to say about anything? No, I don’t think so. Well, with one exception… SPOILER ON HOW THIS DRAFT ENDS (they’ll probably end up changing it):
Boy and girl do not end up together. This is something I applaud because, as the supporting cast dutifully reminds the main players on numerous occasions: long distance relationships almost never work out. The problem with this story is that the lead female character COULD make the move. She’s a teacher, and that’s mobile profession.
Anyway, as so many of these stories go (and real life, I suppose), there are jealousy issues. Competitors. He works with someone named Brianna, who is, gorgeous (naturally). She’s befriended a fellow teacher named Damon, who is easily more mature and sensitive, PLUS he has a gentle sense of humor. She’d be crazy not to end up with Damon. The guy’s not the least bit villainous.
Much as I do not care for Drew Barrymore, and though she’s almost ten years older than the character as written, she would be well-cast in this role. Their ages aren’t all that important anyway. Justin Long as the lead Boy… no, I don’t buy it. However, it’s good stunt casting, given the material…
Anyway, this film contains language and scenes that, again, I do not think a studio will allow. I’ve just started reading scripts, and I wonder if the good ones just get effed in the development process. So for instance, here’s a minor spoiler that suggests the tone of the film:
The Girl is having woman troubles. No, not the typical emotional problems: the GYNO says there’s something wrong with her vagina. The boy, not having seen her for two months, wants to have dirty monkey sex. (By the way, people say "vagina" in this film more than any other I can remember.) Here’s the exchange after she’s calmed down and they’re HUGGING:
Erin:
I did have a *beep* week. Im
stressed and my vagina has a cold
and I just dont feel sexy.
GARRETT
I know how to help that.
ERIN
Oh? How?
GARRETT
I can put my dick in your mouth.
OK, so that’s funny, right? That’s what young men say. Or at least, that’s what us depraved males think but don’t actually say. The only time we’re allowed to say it is when we’re talking to our depraved male friends, and one of them suggests it. We’re not allowed to say that in the presence of a woman, and I can’t believe we’re going to hear it in a film. And let’s be honest here: it’s totally insensitive, one-sided, misogynistic. And that’s going to be a problem for the lead: He’s not likeable. Well, let me amend that: I like him — sort of. I like him because he does and says the things we’re not supposed to say; he can do and say those things because he’s not living in the real world. Unfortunately for him, however, he resides in a film genre that caters to females, so he’s supposed to meet a different set of expectations.
One of the cool things the writer does is give the chick good lines. She’s funny. She’s dude funny. Katherine Heigel was right about KNOCKED UP: her character was humorless and the boys had all the fun. Boys could be loser stoners, but they had the chance to score a hot chick. Women can work hard, play by the rules, but they’ll just turn into anti-funny, neurotic bitches.
There’s a lot more parity here, not to mention realism in the pairing. Oh, wait, the girl’s sister is kind of a bitch, while the guy’s loser friends ARE funny.
It’ll be interesting for me to look back on this post and see how much they kept in.
Sounds like fun!
