PS 4 oscars! Are you *beep* me???

Soon, that kid will be deader than steve Irwin in a tank full of stingrays!

I really enjoyed this movie and I think it’s great to feel that way, especially since it’s rooted from a cheesy show that I never gave a crap about in the past and that was pretty much the point of this redux, wasn’t it?

I’ve been reading several post from the Old Star Trek fans. How this movie killed Star Trek. Really? REALLY? Aw, no fat guys in polyester uniforms and Beatle boots fighting other fat guys in rubber Halloween masks! Cry me a river.

Focus on the positives: J.J. Abrams making something that doesn’t involve polar bears (well, there’s the one polar bear thing, but, you know, he tried), Romulans looking more like scary people and less like members of a gay bar house band, the return of Starfleet-regulation skirts and FMBs, set design that doesn’t resemble a Best Western lobby (ok, that crack was reserved for Next Gen), a mean cast age of 30. Karl Urban!

It was a fun movie. Sure, the plotting and dialogue will need an upgrade in later installments, but damn if this flick didn’t have its heart in the right place.

I saw the film and enjoyed it, but it was about as deep as the late 60′s TV show was. Which was nothing more than cheesy science fiction.

Two words to describe this movie, ‘Mindless Action’. It is really sad to see that the entire Star Trek universe has changed to appeal to the ‘Ooooo Navy Seals!!’ crowd. Star Trek has had a history of stories that centered around the human condition as well as science fiction, which made the series great.

The new helm at Star Trek knows what the general public wants, less talking and more action action action! In fact almost 50% of this film is centered around action scenes and the plot was summed up in a laughable 3 min mindmeld. It was almost as if the director had the thought ‘No one will look at their Blackberry during THIS movie’. This movie says ‘Check your brain at the popcorn counter and enjoy the roller coaster ride!’

Being a business, you want to sell your product the to the most people, but you have to be careful not to alienate the core audience. Well JJ Abrams, you lost one, because mindless action is NOT what Star Trek is all about.

Each generation seems to be able to absorb information faster than the next, but there is a dangerous flip side. That they become more and more intolerant of ‘down time’ or a reflecting phase in a movie after a action scene. This is where character development, key plot devices etc. and most important story telling can take place.

This Star Trek is just another sugary treat that has no gripping story but cool action scenes. Father time is often the best censor of movies, when the ‘coolness’ of those action scenes wears off it will be forgotton. It is a good story that holds true to the censor of time. After all who remembers the plot of ‘Navy Seals’?

‘The story is king’- Clint Eastwood
