With the film’s North American release happening this July 30th, who else feels vindicated that they waited this long? I’ve been tempted so many times to import the DVD or watch it through other means, but I decided to grind it out and hope for a theatrical release here. So being able to see it for the first time on the big screen gives me small pleasure.

I realize the disdain that surrounds this film, but after 3.5 years of seeing people bash this film, I think my expectations are so low that I’ll probably end up liking it. (I never expected Hayao’s level of quality) Also, theatrical releases of these kinds of films are so rare that I want to capitalize on whichever ones I can. Seeing Ponyo (twice) in August was such a treat. I imagine "The Borrowers" will get a theatrical release here (despite Miyazaki not directing it) and I hope the same will be for Takahata’s film Taketori Monogatari, (Tale of the Bamboo Cutter)

this is all thanks to John Lasseter and his push for Ghibil films and an increased awareness of Miyazaki.

"Earthsea" was TERRIBLE, and from what I’ve read, the studio Ghibli animated film completely changed the story too. Why? Le Guin’s stories have won multiple awards and stood the test of time. WHERE do these scriptwriters get the idea that they can improve on one of the best scifi/fantasy writers of all time?

Okay, so I sat through the whole thing and enjoyed it for the first half but then it just seemed to keep meandering and then finally fniished. I was admittedly a little disappointed with the thing on a whole. If I’d understood the end it might’ve helped, so can anyone tell me what actually happened?

The man-witch is killing the girl. I assumed thats how he has unlocked eternal life, he takes the essence of someone else to keep going? Am I right? I don’t know. She slumps down dead and man-witch starts mumbling about something and moving away slowly not looking too good and then the girl just gets up. The man-witch says "eternal life" as he looks upon her all radiant with the sun rising behind her and then she manages to get rid of her hair braids and grows into a dragon while the man-witch finally withers and dies at long last.

Eh? How does that all work?

Is the girl actually a dragon all along? I mean, she has a burn mark on her face. We’re told her parents did that to her. We’re also told that dragons don’t turn on each other right at the beginning of the film by the seafarers and that something must truly be wrong with the world if this is occuring. So is that it? Is the girl actually a dragon, and her parent dragons hutr her when she was younger? I dunno. Or does she just turn into one somehow because she somehow magically remembers her TRUE NAME?

Sorry, it just all went over my head during the conclusion of the movie and to me, it was just like the plot fell apart a little bit. Probably doesn’t help that I never read any of the books either.

Can anyone explain the ending or have I pretty much summed it up as far as others understand as well?
