Holmes as the nervous, quirky love interest came off well and believable. She struck a good balance between likable vegetarian nut and manipulative female. The scenes with her moved and did not falter. Kevin Kline was his usually flawless self. There is a scene with him and a small dog that makes me laugh everytime I think about it. Paul Dano spends much of the movie as an observer. The film makes many references to real people and events in the past that dates the characters. Its very adult, talky and not for the comic book and film noir fans. The one liners come fast and furious. The writing is snappy and has a real New York feel to it with scenes from the Russian T Room to a T-bar (Tranny bar) called Sally's. (Sallys existed and was a Tranny bar in NYC across the street from the old NY Times building near Times Square). Watch for the tranny named Pepper (Gisele Alicea) late in the film. Her one minute sequence almost steals the whole movie. Its been awhile since I saw a film that tackled some off beat subjects and did not bog down in moralizing nonsense. The main problem for me was the humor, it all felt very sitcom-esque and forced. I have never read the book, but at least in the film, Kevin Kline's character was very over-the-top, as were many of the "comic" situations.
