One of Nickelodeon’s biggest shows, with an appeal over an incredibly large cross-section of viewers, was Avatar: The Last Airbender. When you couple a big-name kids’ show with great storytelling and a huge following with the rolling slow-motion train wreck that is M. Night Shyamalan, you get The Last Airbender, coming to theatres July 2010. The Last Airbender will send us out with Aang, the last of the Airbender race and heir to the great legacy of Avatars, masters of all four elements. In some stories, a character’s race is a big influencing factor in the character’s journey, and is thus important. Is this one of those? For those who saw the cartoon, does the fact that a character is Asian have any impact on what that character does in the story? So besides just wanting more work for Asian actors, does this really matter?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the cartoon the entire world was made of 4 nations who were all Asian. Is that any more realistic? I guess some could say that’s racist for not portraying anyone else in the world.
Bottom line is, unless race is a defining part of the characters journey and story, why would any casting director, producer, or director pass up on someone they feel is right for the part based on a physical trait that has absolutely no impact on the story?
first off i just would like to say that i love the show im a big fan of martial arts and i have seen every ep of Avatar..
lets talk about race ok.. everyone is getting all worked up about the fact that m night doesnt have any asian lead in the film and that he is whitewashing the film.
i personally do not believe he is being racist.
ok lets list some things that justify the casting of a non asian in avatar
1. avatar is an american cartoon based of off japanese anime..
2. japanese anime is not feeled with actual japanese characters. no japanese have round eyes such as they do in anime.
3 many japanese anime artist have stated that in a film adaption to an anime the casting of a non asian is ok..
4 reasons for it to be ok.. because anime is the drawing of characters of no specific race or ethnicity.. each character is a blend of multiple ethnicities ie a hybrid of japenes and caucasion skin tone as in a character of japenese decent also has caucasion characterists being of lighter skin then an average japanese person and having round eyes..
5. so in the words of many anime artists anime is a mixed blend of many etnicities and that if a character is of darker skin you obviousily have to have a darker skined person but you do not have to have an asian playing that person or a black person one anime artist said that there is not clear race intended for the character the only asian basis is the culture other then that the etnicity is anyonce guess
